The SAARC Preferential Trading Arrangement (SAPTA) is a trade agreement signed in April 1993 by the seven member countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) — Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. SAPTA was created to promote and sustain mutual trade and economic cooperation among these countries through the exchange of trade concessions.
The agreement serves as a foundational step toward greater trade liberalization and economic integration in the South Asian region. It aims to encourage the flow of goods by providing preferential tariff treatment and facilitating trade among the member states. SAPTA focuses on reciprocity and mutual benefits, ensuring fair advantages to all members while recognizing the developmental differences among member countries.
Key principles of SAPTA include gradual and stepwise trade liberalization, special provisions for least developed contracting states (LDCS), and the inclusion of all products in raw, semi-processed, and processed forms. The arrangement covers tariff reductions, para-tariff elimination, non-tariff barrier removals, and encourages direct trade measures to enhance economic cooperation.
Overall, SAPTA acts as a stepping stone to foster closer economic collaboration within the SAARC region, creating opportunities for increased intra-regional trade and sustainable development.
